New Missionary Adventures in Rome - September 2015

When the new missionaries arrive in Rome, they are exhausted.  Unfortunately, we keep them moving all day long because taking a nap usually results in worse jet lag.  They are eager to be missionaries and become immersed in a new culture.  There were only four missionaries in this group so we were able to spend more personal time with them.  Along with one of the Assistants, we walked to the street market and talked to people along the way.  In the afternoon they rode the Metro to downtown Rome where they were able to see the Colosseum and a few sights along the way.  Some of them may never make it back to Rome until the day they return home.  We want them to gain an appreciation for the wonderful country and mission they will be serving in.  After all, this is the best mission in the world!

Heaven smiled on us today.  We had four new missionaries come to Rome today from the Provo MTC.  They had all their luggage.  That is always a miracle.  We are so excited to have them.  We couldn't ask for a better group of missionaries.  Benvenuti!

Leaving a Legacy

When missionaries complete their missions, one of the things they are asked to do is leave a legacy for new missionaries who will be coming to the mission.  They are given a form that says:

           "As you finish this wonderful chapter of missionary service, you have the chance to help those that follow.  Think back to the first days of your mission.  You were full of new missionary energy but maybe not quite sure how to use it.  Take some time and contemplate about all the many lessons and great experiences that you experienced during these two years of service.  What knowledge would you have wanted in order to enhance your experiences?  What great tips of obedience or endurance would you like the next generation to know?  Now is your chance.  Please write  a short letter speaking to all those that will follow."

The missionary with a good attitude works with people, not through them.

My favorite quote from Elder Holland is:  “This is hard work.  It is the hardest work you’ll ever do.  That’s why I say this is the most important work you’ll ever do.  I think the two go together.  It’s hard work but everyday, in every way, it will get better, and you’ll feel the Spirit of the Lord.  You’ll know He loves you.”

If you’re not happy, something is wrong.

It is important during the lessons to not teach everything but to teach only the exact portion the investigators need.

Rely on the spirit every moment.

Plan what to do.

The Lord has called you to His work.  I invite you to follow Him.

Be obedient.

We don’t only teach the message.  We have to become the message.

As a greenie I felt inadequate and out of place.  Living the mission has made it possible for me to learn to be better and fulfill my callings.

The Lord is always ready to help us.

It's a bitter sweet moment when missionaries complete their missions and return home.  They leave a void in the mission.  They will take their experience and testimonies with them  but they will be a blessing wherever they go.   Thank you for the time you spent with us and for the lives you have blessed.
